Technology has advanced to the point where the phoropter, that workhorse of ophthalmic practice, can and should be put out to pasture. In use for almost 100 years, the phoropter is central to contemporary eyecare practice. Elegant in its simplicity and wide-ranging in its utility, the phoropter has remained little changed since the early 20th century.
